The Don’ts of CPAP Usage

Don’t change your machine’s prescription settings

CPAP air pressure is a prescribed substance (even if it’s pressurized air). Just like you shouldn’t change a medication dosage without first consulting your doctor, you shouldn’t mess with your pressure settings. You could damage your machine, void your warranty, or make your therapy less effective — even intolerable — by doing so.

Don’t ignore your machine’s comfort settings

Your CPAP machine offers settings related to temperature, humidity, and comfort that you’re welcome to adjust. If you’re unsure if you should make changes or don’t know how to make the changes, you can either consult your user’s manual or call your sleep clinic for support from an equipment expert.

Don’t elevate your CPAP machine higher than your head

Make sure your machine sits at or below the height of your reclining head. Otherwise, water that collects in the hose could drain directly into your nose rather than back into the chamber.

Don’t put your CPAP machine on the floor

The air intake on your machine is more likely to suck in particulate matter closer to the floor if you do so. Pets can more easily access your machine, increasing damage risks.

Don’t forget to wash your face before using CPAP

Many problems with facial acne related to CPAP arise because the headgear itself isn’t clean. Or, if the headgear is clean, it’s placed on the skin that isn’t clean. Oils, bacteria, makeup, and dirt become trapped and lead to irritated skin. Always put a clean mask on a clean face.

Don’t over-tighten your headgear

This torques the headgear and cushion so that they don’t “seat” properly on the face, creating greater gaps and leaks.

You should be able to slide a finger between your mask cushion and your face; masks are designed to use the incoming pressurized air to complete the seal.

Don’t forget to use your CPAP during naps

Sleep apnea happens every time you sleep, even if it’s during the day. Your best practice: always use your machine during every sleep period.

Don’t avoid CPAP if you have a respiratory infection

Using CPAP when you have a head cold or upper respiratory infection will actually help you get over your illness sooner. This is because the warm, moist air will keep your breathing passages open and you’ll get more sleep, which your body needs when you’re sick.

Don’t use anything but distilled water in the humidifier

Tap water and bottled water have chemicals, microorganisms, and minerals that can make you sick or damage your machine. Also, do not put any kind of essential oil or other non-water liquid into your humidifier, as these aren’t safe for inhaling into the lungs.

Don’t use petroleum products inside your mask cushion

Petroleum products are composed of volatile compounds that are dangerous when inhaled into the lungs through the highly pressurized air delivery system of CPAP. Menthol products in a petroleum base are not safe to place in the nostrils or anywhere where they can be inhaled for this reason.

The don’ts of CPAP cleaning

Don’t forget to clean your machine

Without a good CPAP cleaning practice, you risk becoming sick from a buildup of bacteria, viruses, pollutants, and other microorganisms.

Don’t immerse your CPAP machine in liquids

When it comes to the base of your CPAP machine, it’s best cleaned with a damp cloth or wipe. Immersion could damage your machine.

Don’t clean masks or machine parts with peroxide, bleach, ammonia, or alcohol

Not only do these substances put your health and safety at risk, but these chemicals will quickly degrade your accessories, forcing you to replace them more frequently.

Don’t wash headgear in the washing machine

If you put it in the washing machine, it will become stretched out and won’t fit right.

Don’t dry headgear in the clothes dryer

CPAP headgear isn’t designed to tumble in a dryer. After wiping it down with a damp cloth or wipe, let it dry on a towel or hang it dry.

Don’t wash equipment in the dishwasher

Dishwashers aren’t meant to wash CPAP equipment. Temperatures, detergents, and unhygienic substances within the dishwasher can damage your equipment.

Don’t swing the hoses around to dry them out

The added strain on tubing can tear the hose away from the sections used to connect it to the machine or the mask.

Today’s machines provide options for blowing air through hoses to help warm them and push out any remaining condensation, should you need this option at bedtime.

Don’t forget to replace or wash filters

Some CPAP machines use a single replaceable filter, while others feature washable filters. It’s important to keep your filters replaced or clean to ensure the highest safety and quality of your pressurized air.

Does Breathing Through Your Nose Stop Snoring?

The theory behind mouth taping is pretty simple, and might not be dangerous as it sounds if you’re perfectly healthy. “Mouth taping is an old-fashioned home remedy which is sometimes used to treat snoring, allergies, and poor oral hygiene.

It is thought when the mouth is taped, the person will naturally start to breathe through their nose. Breathing through your nose can help to ease the symptoms of chronic lung diseases, like asthma.

Nose breathing also makes the air more humid, which increases oxygen intake and improves airflow, and it can lower the risk of throat and mouth infections, such as gum inflammation and tooth decay.

So, yes, actually, breathing through your nose is healthier than breathing through your mouth. Experts say you shouldn’t really use your mouth to breathe unless you’re doing strenuous exercise or your nasal passages are blocked.

Sleeping with This Trendy Indoor Plant in Your Bedroom Can Cure Snoring

Over the last decades, there has been an increase in the number of people emitting snoring sounds during the night; some specialists say that over 40% of people live with someone who snores every night, so you can see this is a rather common problem.

Most of the people who snore don’t even know they snore or they simply ignore the problems this sound can bring to their lives. This situation deprives you of sleep, and the sleep of people that live with you, especially your spouse.

As a matter of fact, bed partners may be the most affected by snoring, since the snorer isn’t awakened constantly by his/her own sound.

There are many case studies done on bed partners and snoring, and the conclusion is pretty obvious — this is a matter that affects each one of the people involved and also hurts the relationship.

But, we have some good news! Authority on all things science and information, NASA, says one trendy indoor plant can put a stop to snoring and sleepless nights. According to NASA, adding a pineapple plant to your bedroom can cure snoring.

How does Pineapple Plant Help Snoring?

Indoor air pollution is a growing concern with damage being done to our internal environment by toxins released from everyday products such as paint, cleaning chemicals, fly spray, deodorant, and air fresheners; all of which affect our indoor air quality.

People are spending more time indoors due to work commitments and city-center living, and are surrounded by stagnant, polluted air, responsible for triggering a wide range of conditions including headaches, fatigue, ear, nose, and throat irritations…and snoring!

This is where the Pineapple Plant and houseplants, in general, can help. Continuously working, they help filter out pollutants and release oxygen and moisture into the atmosphere, adding to the overall health benefits offered by mother nature, helping to reduce stress and improve mental and physical health.

For those lucky enough to sleep through the night without the disturbance of snoring, the plant is a chic addition to the home which is easy to care for and adds a little touch of The Tropics to any room.

Hi, Tania here, my family are big snorers, and some even have sleep apnea. The body size of my family is on the larger side, and this causes us to snore at night. Here’s a great method that has helped me control my snoring and eventually stop.

The Side Effects of Snoring

Sleep deprivation is not a matter to be taken lightly. Apart from losing out on sleep either due to their or their partner’s habits; they also lose out on sleep worrying about the dangers of snoring.

They worry about the reasons for it imagining the worst like sleep apnea, heart problems, strokes, etc. They may also get unduly tense over whether they would stop breathing during their sleep.

Apart from the symptomatic risks of snoring, problems arising from sleep deprivation are also many. There are many problems that arise from losing out on precious sleep -

Short Term

  • A person deprived of sleep shows a lack of alertness and consequently a decrease in performance levels. If your night sleep is even reduced by an hour and a half, your alertness level apparently reduces by at least 32%.
  • A decrease in alertness and feeling constantly sleepy throughout the day reduces your memory and your grasping ability. Thinking and processing information also become slower.
  • Lack of sleep in couples on a regular basis due to snoring creates problems in their relationship. Mood swings and crankiness creates constant friction leading to misunderstandings and fights. This sometimes even causes a break in their relationship.
  • Over a period of time, a person who lacks good sleep on a regular basis will not be able to attend and enjoy programs like movies, child’s school plays, or even watch their favorite TV Shows.
  • Lack of sleep leads to possible occupational Injury.
  • Drowsy driving results in automobile crashes leading to injuries and even sometimes fatalities.

Long Term

Long-term sleep deprivation due to snoring leads to a lot of clinical consequences. Sleep disorders lead to

  • Increase in High blood pressure
  • The onset of Heart attack
  • Possible Heart failure
  • Paralytic Stroke
  • Weight gain or Obesity
  • Depression and mood disorders and other psychiatric problems.
  • Disorder related to Attention Deficit
  • Mental disorders
  • Problems during pregnancy and retarded growth of the child.
  • Getting injured in accidents related to drowsiness.
  • Injury from accidents
  • Reduced quality of life.

Studies even show that sleep deprivation leads to greater mortality than even smoking or high blood pressure or even heart diseases.

Among elderly men and women, lack of sleep even leads to institutionalization.

Even if other medical risks didn’t exist (and they certainly do), the challenges posed by the sleep deprivation associated with snoring would be reason enough to take action.

The consequences of sleep deprivation are particularly worrisome because they don’t just affect the snorer. The snorer’s sleep partner can experience all of these dangers simply by virtue of trying to spend a night in bed with the snorer.

What does Snoring mean medically?

We have now analyzed the risks of sleep deprivation due to snoring disturbances. Negative medical repercussions of snoring do exist and there is enough evidence and records to prove this.

Researchers have proved snorers sometimes even those who do not have sleep apnea are more prone to life-threatening diseases and heart attacks and strokes.

With the reduction in oxygen flow, the body and brain are deprived of oxygen thereby leading to even premature death. The life expectancy of snorers is usually lesser than non-snorers and this is apparently due to this oxygen deprivation.

Type II diabetes is also linked to snoring. People who snore are more prone to this type of diabetes than those who sleep silently.

Snoring is not just a little noise after sunset. It can be quite a serious matter warranting immediate attention.

When to See Your Doctor About a Snoring Cure?

For most people snoring is not a major issue. In fact, most people snore at some time or another because of partial airway obstruction; maybe they were drinking alcohol before bed, or simply because they are sleeping in the wrong position.

Then there are the people who are chronic snorers, but who need no more than an over-the-counter Snoring Cure, such as nasal strips, to prevent the snoring from getting out of hand.

But what about those people who struggle with snoring nightly and try many different Snoring Cures, without measurable success? What do they do next to try and alleviate a sleeping problem that is becoming a nightmare?

It is never a bad idea to see a doctor if you are a chronic snorer, even if an OTC medication or nasal strip alleviates the problem for you.

Chronic snoring can be a sign of something far worse, and it is important that you allow your doctor to check your heart, blood pressure, etc. to ensure that your underlying problem is not a serious medical issue.

If you find that you have no medical issues keep on using the Snoring Cure that is working for you.

For those of you who don’t see a doctor, most likely because you don’t see snoring as a serious issue, you need to take stock of how you feel each morning after you wake up.

If you find that you are still tired and experience headaches even after you feel like you had a full night’s sleep, then you want to have your doctor check you for sleep apnea.

If you suffer from sleep apnea, then no over-the-counter Snoring Cure is going to help you. Your doctor will need to treat you for the underlying cause before your snoring abates.

Sleep apnea is a condition where a person stops breathing during the night. In order for a diagnosis to be made, the person in question is monitored for 24 hours (especially during sleep) to see if they stop breathing and how often.

Breathing must cease for a duration of ten seconds and it must occur at least 5 times an hour or it is not considered sleep apnoea.

If it is discovered that this is the reason for your snoring, then your doctor will provide you with a Snoring Cure that you would never be able to get on your own, and in all likelihood, you will use a breathing device to keep your airways open and your doctor will recommend some lifestyle changes.

As someone who’s lived with a snorer for over 20 years and has tried almost every type of snoring device on the market, I’m in an ideal position to comment on the many problems associated with snoring and can recommend some of the Snoring Cures we’ve tried.

How Weight Loss Can Help Reduce Sleep Apnea?

There is a strong link between obesity and sleep apnea. There are several causes of sleep apnea but one of them is simple airway obstruction that occurs when your muscles relax while sleeping.

When you are overweight, there is excess tissue around your airways and more pressure on them due to the extra weight. This makes it easier for them to collapse and restrict their breathing once they are asleep.

Snoring is not only an annoying sound, it is a signal that your airways are partially collapsed and the air is struggling to pass. In some cases, your airway can totally shut off and while your chest moves in an effort to pull in air, none of it reaches your lungs.

The result of these episodes of sleep apnea can be very serious. You could be constantly tired the next day which makes you less alert and more prone to accidents. Obstructive sleep apnea can even lead to death from heart attack or pulmonary hypertension.

Sleep apnea is a very serious problem that has the potential for an easy solution — weight loss. Of course, for weight loss to help correct the condition, obesity must be the underlying cause of airway obstruction.

Recent studies undertaken by Temple University found that obese patients who lost the recommended amount of weight were three times as likely to eliminate sleep apnea episodes as compared to other people in the study who did not lose weight.

By losing weight, many of these participants were able to totally reverse their sleep apnea problem while those who did not lose weight continued to have episodes of apnea and in fact, their symptoms even became worse over time.

The biggest benefit occurs when you reach your ideal weight, but doctors have noted that much improvement in sleep apnea is observed after just a 10% weight loss.

Therefore, if you struggle with being overweight and have sleep apnea, don’t despair because you don’t think you can ever lose enough weight to make a difference in your condition.

Even losing some weight can lessen the frequency of your episodes and thereby reduce the detrimental effects on your health.

Weight loss is never easy, but it is just a matter of simple math. You must burn off more calories than you consume each day. This is why exercise is such a vital component of losing weight.

When it is combined with a healthy diet, you can lose weight quickly and safely. Plus it is more likely to stay off than weight that is lost rapidly from a fad diet.

Of course, weight loss has many other important health benefits as well. It can reverse or improve other diseases like type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

There are many compelling reasons why you should lose weight. If you have sleep apnea, this should be one of your primary considerations. Other methods used to treat the condition are only temporary and treat the symptoms but do not correct the underlying cause.

If you are overweight, it is possible that you could have sleep apnea and not even be aware of it. Some of the symptoms are headaches, irritability, excessive daytime sleepiness, and snoring at night.

For a diagnosis, you should visit your doctor for an examination which might include a sleep test.

The sleep test monitors your respiration, oxygen levels, and cardiac status while you are sleeping. You may be shocked to discover how often you stop breathing during the night.

What Causes Snoring in Males?

It is commonly known that men usually snore more than women. According to statistics, more than a third of men and almost one-fifth of women snore after thirty years old, and this increases with age.

After the age of 60, 60% of men and more than 30% of women snore. To understand why men snore more than women, we need to understand the physiology of snoring.

What Causes Snoring?

When a person breathes, the air moves through the mouth or nose to the pharynx (part of the throat that sits behind the mouth and nasal cavity) and larynx (part of the throat that stops food and drink from blocking the airway). The air then moves to the trachea (windpipe), through to the bronchi (air passageway to the lungs), and then finally enters the lungs.

When a person is awake, their pharynx and larynx muscles are always engaged. However, during sleep, these muscles relax, which causes the airways to be partially blocked by the over-relaxed muscle tissue.

With the air not completely getting through to the lungs, the pressure in the airways increases and causes a vibration in the soft tissues of the respiratory tract. The sound this vibration makes is snoring. The degree of air obstructed determines the severity of the snoring. In most cases, the narrower the airways, the louder the snoring.

What Causes Snoring in Males?

The main reasons why men snore are:

1. The accumulated fat in the neck region squeezes the walls of the larynx, narrowing the airway passage. A 20% increase in the ideal weight of a male could lead to snoring, however, for women, a 30–40% increase in ideal weight is usually needed to cause snoring.

2. The use of sleeping pills, alcohol, or smoking leads to the relaxation of the pharynx and larynx muscles, which could cause periodic or continuous snoring. In general, men tend to consume more alcohol and smoke than women.

3. Nasal septum deviation occurs when there is an overgrowth of bone and cartilage tissues inside the nasal cavity. Nasal injuries could also cause a deviated nasal septum. It is common for males to get more nasal injuries than women due to rough contact in sports or other activities.

4. Polyps in the nose cause snoring, which occurs more often in men than in women.

Is Snoring Dangerous?

If the walls of the throat are narrowed or completely closed, the air struggles to reach the lungs, which causes episodes of apnea (the lack of breathing during a period of sleep).

If breathing stops for more than 10 seconds, it is diagnosed as Complicated Snoring. In severe cases, the period of apnea can last up to 3 minutes!

With prolonged and regular stops of breath during the night, the organs start to suffer from oxygen deprivation known as Hypoxia. In men, this disorder greatly increases arterial pressure during sleep and immediately after waking.

Hypoxia wakes the brain to command the body to breathe, which interrupts normal sleep. As a result, during the day, a person feels tired, has a reduced intellectual capacity, and deterioration of attention and memory. Snoring can also cause erectile dysfunction in men.

Treatment for Snoring

Lifestyle Changes:

We now know the reasons for male snoring and possible health risks, however, how do you curb this disorder? Below are some general recommendations that could help reduce snoring.

1. Stop or reduce the use of sedatives and sleeping pills;

2. Stop or reduce smoking and drinking alcohol;

3. Reduce excess weight, which can also improve muscle tone

Anti-Snoring Exercises:

These exercises increase the tone of the muscles of the soft palate, larynx, and tongue. The results aren’t instant, but you should be able to notice an improvement in 2–3 weeks. What’s great about this treatment is that there are no side effects!

Here are some exercises that will help decrease snoring:

1. Strain the palatine muscles to their maximum by pronouncing the sounds of “o” and “a”.

2. Put a pencil in your lips, tightly close the lips and hold the pencil for 5 minutes.

3. Try to touch your chin with your tongue twice a day for 30 mins. You should feel tension at the base of the tongue.

4. Simulate biting an apple- repeat this 10 times.

5. Close and open the mouth while creating resistance with your hand. Perform this exercise morning and night 30 times.

6. Before bedtime, clamp a plastic or wooden stick between your teeth for 3 mins.

Repeat these exercises from time to time to maintain the tone of the muscles in the throat.

External Anti-Snoring Aids:

1. Anti-snoring pillows provide an anatomical position for the neck, which helps to align the airways and allows for smooth breathing. There are many different types of these pillows available on the market.

2. Mouth devices to stop snoring hold the jaw, tongue, and soft tissue palate in place to allow for smooth, uninterrupted breathing.

3. Medication. There are a number of medications that can help decrease snoring, available in the form of drops, sprays, and aerosols. They work by irritating the mucous membrane, which increases muscle tone. It is best to consult a doctor before using these medications to ensure the treatment is appropriate for your specific condition.

4. CPAP Therapy is a mask device that provides positive air pressure in the airways during sleep, preventing muscle relaxation.

5. Use of laser and cryotherapy to correct the soft palate tissue, tongue, or back wall of the larynx. This method is not the cheapest but tends to be effective. Such treatment is used for polyps of the respiratory tract, outgrowths of the mucous membrane, and adenoidal growth.

Whether you are a male snorer or the partner, family, or friend of a male snorer (or female snorer), I hope this article has given you a better understanding of snoring and the large scope of treatments available to help you get a peaceful nights sleep.
